Dunnellon, Florida covers a large area and occupies a norther section of Citrus County, the southwest section of Marion County and a part of Levy County as well.

During the 1890s Dunnellon became a boom town with the discovery of phosphorus which was heavily mined and the population soared to over 100,000.

Often referred to as the Treasure of the Nature Coast, Dunnellon Florida offers quick access to the Rainbow River and the Withlacoochee River. The entire area is dotted with natural, freshwater springs pumping out millions of gallons of crystal clear water everyday.

Rainbow Springs, the headwaters of the Rainbow River is a popular destination for locals and tourists visiting the Rainbow Springs State Park. The park, which was a zoo attraction in the 1950s and 60s offers a walking path to see up close the native flora and fauna of the region. The springs themselves offer a roped off swimming area with dock and ladders to get in and out of the 72 degree water and beat the summer heat. Nearby is a picnic and recreation area as well as a snack bar and concessions stand. You can even rent a canoe or kayak here.

Further down the spring fed Rainbow River is KP Hole campground and recreation area where the main draw is tubing down the river. Gently drifting along with the current, enjoying the natural scenery and wildlife as it glides past. A bus or van will pick you up not far from downtown and bring you back to where you started for a small fee.

Downtown Dunnellon Florida is like a village that time forgot. You can stroll the tree lined streets past large Victorian homes lit by antique looking street lights and experience what it was like here a hundred years ago.
